The Chamizal dispute was
still going on when I was growing up. I remember the heated arguments around this border conflict over roughly 600 acres
(2.4 km2) on the US-Mexico Border between El Paso, Texas and Ciudad Juarez,
Chihuahua. The dispute came about as the bed of the Rio Grande shifted from the course originally surveyed in 1852. The
word Chamizal means land of chamizo, a bush that grows naturally in the area. La disputa por El Chamizal todavía se daba cuando yo era niña. Recuerdo
las acaloradas discusiones acerca de este conflicto por algo así como 2.4 kilómetros cuadrados sobre la
frontera de El Paso, Texas y Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua. La disputa surgió porque el cauce del río cambió
con respecto de su curso en 1852. La palabra Chamizal significa tierra de chamizo, un arbusto que se da naturalmente
en la zona.
